The core has several gears and turbines which are responsible for these 8 steps (5 of them are dedicated to the turbo stages). The first step is fuel compression, followed by 2 cold turbo levels. The fourth step is where the fuel starts burning – combustion stage, which creates thrust for the next, 5th step – thrust step, which provides power to the planetary gears and turbines and moves the system. This step is followed by two hot turbo steps and the circle is enclosed by the final 8th step – bigger turbine. Both EMCORE and Spectrolab offer space qualified solar cells at about the 30% efficiency range:

Space Solar Cells.
http://www.emcore.com/space-photovoltaics/space-solar-cells/

Spectrolab: photovoltaics.
http://www.spectrolab.com/space.htm

Even that would be good enough to get the lightweight solar power with concentrators. About the cooling requirements that depends on the concentration. At low concentrations, say, around 10 Suns no cooling would be required. And it would still be sufficient to get the needed high power at lightweight.
However, the degree to which you can save weight on the solar cells would be quite significant at higher concentrations, say at the hundreds to thousands of Suns range. Then it might be advantageous to investigate lightweight means of getting the needed cooling in these cases as well.

Bob ClarkRobert Clarkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16114043697010364282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7598615455712402973.post-76457519079281392702014-03-17T18:38:01.234-04:002014-03-17T18:38:01.234-04:00Hi Bob:
If I understand correctly, this concept ...Hi Bob:

If I understand correctly, this concept has 2 or maybe 3 technical issues: (1) high concentration associated with PV panel heat rejection risks, (2) cell voltage and current production stymied at high concentration, and perhaps (3) problems with stacking up cells in series to very high voltages.

I would add a 4th: research results (efficiencies near 30%) are quite at variance with what is mature enough to be actually sold on the military/industrial market. Those are typically in the 16-24% range. What is on the civilian market is even lower, at around 10%.

Heat rejection might or might not be addressed by a high-emittance black coating on the backside of both the panel and the concentrator panel. It's worth a look, if the areal thermal conductance is high enough to support heat rejection that way. If you are limited to just the PV panel itself, this probably won't work.

I can't help with the other issues, I know too little about the topic. But, I do find the notion of lightweight solar power for electric propulsion, instead of heavy nuclear, quite intriguing. This plus ordinary chemical propulsion might offer a very practical way to achieve fast flights to and from Mars.

GW

Gary Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06723964751681093047noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7598615455712402973.post-1964126219265531002014-03-16T13:41:54.562-04:002014-03-16T13:41:54.562-04:00Excellent article Bob!Excellent article Bob!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
